The Melaka Straits Mosque or Masjid Selat Melaka can be found illuminating the Straits of Melaka along Pulau Melaka, a fabricated 40 hectares island beside the coastal shoreline of the historical city of Malacca.
The Melaka Straits Mosque is dubbed by the locals as the floating mosque as it is the one and only mosque in Malaysia that is being constructed and stilted at sea level. The remarkable floating sight will occur upon rising tide, which is especially mesmerizing accompanied by gracious dawn or dusk.
The Melaka Straits Mosque was officially opened in 24 November 2006 by Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin, Malaysia’s 12th Yang Di-Pertuan Agong. The most noticeable peculiarity for the Melaka Straits Mosque is its 30 meters high minaret which also acts as a beacon for ships sailing along the Straits of Melaka. The mosque is also fitted with a gigantic golden dome with blue trims where it is located directly above its main prayer hall. Visitors can appreciate the mosque’s Middle Eastern architectural design in sync with Malay decorative elements, for instance, a beautifully carved platform made out of teak wood and a colourful arch on the entrance hall finished with Malay motifs and floweret.
The Melaka Straits Mosque is especially spectacular at night where the entire structure is well lit up against the darkness of the night sky. An excellent way for visitors without their own transport to visit the Melaka Straits Mosque is via the Melaka Duck Tour, where it picks visitors up from the popular Menara Taming Sari and cruise through many of Malacca’s renowned attractions.
The Melaka Duck Tour is the most recent addition to the variety of tourist attractions in Malacca, it enables tourists to engage in a new experience and sight what Malacca has to offer, via land and sea touring on an amphibious vehicle.
