The Jonker Street Library is also recognized as The Memorial Library of Jin Xing. Amongst the popular urbanized and commercialised Jonker Street, visitors might not expect such an unusual air-conditioned place to exist. The Jonker Street Library is located diagonally opposite of the popular Geographer’s Cafe in Jonker Street – where there’s live band performance happening almost every night.
The Jonker Street Library is owned by Cheng Hoon Teng Temple whereby most of the books are received via contribution from the public in Melaka. The Library houses tons of books ranging from religious books, novelties, fictions, non-fictions, to children’s book. The books in the Library are in English, Mandarin and Malay language. Jonker Street Library has a frontage with a charismatic timeworn sense to it.
Visitors to the Library may catch themselves lost in time in the cosy and peaceful environment of the library. Jonker Street Library is probably one of the most understated attractions in the area which is furnished with conventional Chinese furniture. Although the library houses many genres of books, however, due to the library being owned by a Chinese temple, there is also a myriad of Buddhist literature and scriptures.
If you’re a book junkie who loves to wander in an enormous amount of old collection, the Jonker Street Library will be your cup of tea where it provides spacious reading areas that are lit up with natural lighting (thanks to the museum’s 18th century Dutch design that provides a well-lit centre courtyard). The Jonker Street Library, like any other libraries, has stringent library rules to follow such as restrictions to the use of mobile phone, speaking loudly, etc.
The quaint space of the Library offers visitors a break from the hustle and bustle of Jonker Street and having several artifacts placed in the library adds charisma and character to this heritage library.
