The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum is a private air-conditioned museum situated in Malacca along Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock (Heeren Street), parallel to the well-known Jonker Street. The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum was a Peranakan house where four generations of Baba Nyonya descendants lived in till 1985.
Baba Nyonya (Peranakan) are the descendant of straits-born Chinese who have adopted the fusion of Malay and Chinese culture. This unique blend of culture is the result of intermarriage between Chinese and local Malay. The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum displays the richness of the Baba Nyonya cultures and customs and is mesmerising inside out for visitors to indulge in the culture and history of Baba Nyonya in Melaka. This residential house was acquired by Chan Cheng Siew in the late 19th century and it offers visitors a glimpse into the opulence of many Peranakan families in Malacca.
The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum is a collection of three beautifully restored houses that exemplifies typical 19th century Baba Nyonya residence. Inside the museum, visitors will experience a close intimacy with a heritage residential house which was built in 1896 that contains infusion of influences from Dutch, Malay, Portuguese and Chinese culture.
The Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum offers distinctive section for visitors to wander around which include the reception hall, kitchen, ancestral hall and other parts of a Peranakan home. In every room of the museum, pieces of neo-classical European furniture and genuine Baba Nyoya furniture, classic Victorian era chandeliers and floor tiles, distinctive east and west finishing, are left exactly how they were.
