In the old days, it was common to merely have a cup of Kopi O without wondering where the beans might have originated from. Now, it's an entirely different ball game with the whole new coffee scene and hipster experience. Backlane Coffee is one of the artisanal cafes sprouting in UNESCO Melaka.
During the bustling weekend nights, Jonker Street is the to-go vicinity if one enjoys mob navigating or re-enacting an American football scene. The charming Backlane Coffee offers a half time break from the robust street and brings its customers into a good old coffee house vibe.
Backlane Coffee has been purveying fresh coffees since a few years back. Owner and founder, Eng, has a passion for a vintage cafe, just like the ones she used to frequent while studying abroad. It is this simplest of idea, that blossomed into the Backlane Coffee that we enjoy today. The entire Backlane Coffee, from its hanging light bulbs, old fashioned timber furniture, and indoor plants, are cultivated by Eng into realism.
Biscuits, more cakes, more pastries line the counter of Backlane Coffee. A melange of brewed tea options are visible on menus that spreads across big chalkboards embraced by metallic brushed pipelines. The coffees served here have earned a decent reputation among connoisseurs. Amusingly, Backlane Coffee is named after the whereabouts in which it is positioned at, in adjacent to a back lane off the main streets.
Eng also introduced us to the two most popular dessert cakes of Backlane Coffee. Chocolate Desire, chocolate mousse, chocolate sponge, chocolate ganache, all served in one serving. And Passion Fruit Mont Blanc, a perfect mishmash of passion fruit to balance the sweetness of the Mont Blanc cake.
Of all, the aroma of freshly brewed coffees will tempt anyone in ordering Backlane Coffee’s rotating blend, sourced overseas. All coffees are served with “Backlane” stamped butter cookie, a unique way of making a lasting impression to one.
